Learn the Borei Pri HaGafen blessing

The Blessing: Borei Pri HaGafen

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הַגָּפֶן

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha'olam, borei pri hagafen.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.

When to Say Borei Pri HaGafen

This blessing is recited before drinking wine or grape juice. It applies to:

  • Wine (red, white, rosé)
  • Grape juice
  • Wine-based drinks (if wine flavor is still prominent)

Special Status of Wine

Wine has a unique blessing that is more specific than the general "Shehakol" for drinks. This reflects wine's special status in Jewish tradition - it's used for Kiddush, Havdalah, weddings, circumcisions, and the Passover Seder.

Wine in Jewish Practice

  • Kiddush - Sanctifying Shabbat and holidays
  • Havdalah - Ending Shabbat
  • Four Cups - At the Passover Seder
  • Wedding - Under the chuppah
  • Brit Milah - Circumcision ceremony

After Drinking Wine

After drinking wine (a revi'it or more, about 3 oz), the after-blessing is "Al HaGefen" - a special condensed version of Birkat HaMazon for wine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is grape juice the same blessing?

Yes! Grape juice gets the same "Borei Pri HaGafen" blessing as wine. It can also be used for Kiddush and other rituals.

What about wine during a meal?

Even during a meal with HaMotzi over bread, wine still requires its own blessing (Borei Pri HaGafen) because of its special status.

What about grape-flavored drinks?

Artificially grape-flavored drinks are "Shehakol," not HaGafen. Only actual wine or grape juice gets the special blessing.
